Wendy’s is an American international fast-food restaurant chain. Dave Thomas founded it on November 15, 1969, in Columbus, Ohio, United States. On January 29, 2006, the company transferred their headquarters to Dublin, Ohio. The company announced a merger with Triac, the parent company of Arby’s. Although it is under new ownership, the headquarters remained in Dublin. Following the merger, Triarc became known as Wendy’s/Arby’s Group, now The Wendy’s Company. This is a publicly traded company.
Wendy’s is famous for its square hamburgers, the Frosty, and sea salt fries. Frosty is a form of soft-serve ice cream mixed with frozen starches. The idea for old-fashioned hamburgers was influenced by Dave Thomas’ trip to Kewpee Hamburgers in his hometown of Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Kewpee square hamburgers are served with thick malt shakes. Thomas opened a restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969. The location later added a Tim Hortons but was closed on March 2, 2007.
The founder named the restaurant after his 4th child Melinda Lou “Wendy” Thomas. Photographs of Wendy were on display at the original restaurant until it closed. L.S. Hartzog opened the first franchise in for Indianapolis, Indiana in August 1972. The first Wendy’s TV commercials were aired in 1972. The 500th Wendy’s restaurant was opened in 1976 in Toronto, Canada. In 1978, Wendy’s established the fried chicken chain Sisters Chicken in 1978. In 1987, it was sold to its largest franchiser.
In 1979, the first European location opened in Munich. Wendy’s is the first fast-food chain to offer the salad bar. Wendy’s entered the Asian market and opened restaurants in Japan (1980), Hong Kong (1982), Philippines and Singapore (1983), and South Korea (1984). From 1988 to 1990, the restaurant chain expanded operations internationally to Mexico, Indonesia, New Zealand, Guatemala, Turkey, Greece, and Italy.
The founder of Wendy’s introduced America to his fresh, made-to-order, square burgers. Some of the quick-service restaurants were using frozen beef and mass-producing their food. Fortunately, Dave developed an innovative technique to prepare fresh, made-to-order hamburgers. Wendy’s is very popular for square ground beef hamburgers that hang over the bun served with the customer’s choice of toppings.
Wendy’s quickly offer high quality and variety to its millions of customers every single day. A customer can choose whether he wants a Junior or a Single patty. Originally, the restaurant had only two chicken sandwiches; grilled and fried. The spicy chicken sandwich began as a promotional sandwich, which later became part of the menu.
The Turkey and Swiss and Ham and Swiss are also part of the menu. In some occasions, some of the locations offer the fried sandwich or those who do not like chicken or beef.
