Starbucks thrives to inspire and care for humanity. It offers cups of coffees made from the roasted high-quality whole beans. A cup of coffee can tell you a great story of the company.

How It All Started?

There are two (2) things that Starbucks want to achieve since they started: to share great coffee with friends and to be part of making the world better. These are the company goals as it was first launched in 1971. At that time, they were a roaster and retailer of whole bean and ground coffee. They also sold tea and spices. Starbucks continues to stand by these principles today.

Decades ago, Starbucks was a single store in the historic Pike Place Market in Seattle. The company made some of the premium fresh-roasted whole bean coffees in the world. The name “Starbucks” was inspired by Moby Dick, the first mate in Herman Melville. The sea influenced the logo, and it featured a twin-tailed siren from Greek mythology.

The company name reminds of the romantic high seas and the seafaring custom of the early coffee traders.

Howard Schultz, Starbucks’ chairman and chief executive officer, first walked into a Starbucks store in 1981. He was captivated by his first cup of Sumatra and became a part of the company after a year.

Howard travelled to Italy in 1983, and he was fascinated with Italian coffee bars and the beautiful coffee experience. He envisioned of bringing the Italian coffeehouse tradition back to America. He wants to make Starbucks a place for excellent conversations and a sense of community.

He left the company for a short period to establish his Il Giornale coffeehouses. In August 1987, he returned to buy the company with the help of local investors.

From its humble beginnings, Starbucks is characterized as a different type of company. It’s the one that is not exclusive to coffee and its long tradition, but also provides a sense of bond.
