The Club at Hillbrook‘s History
In 1919, the Edmund S. Burke, Jr. held the title to over 500 acres of lush, rolling woodlands in the Chagrin Valley. He was the former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. He also founded firms that later became Bethlehem Steel. The land he acquired has natures as its backdrop, and Mr. Burke built a home that would become legendary.
Nowadays, the property is known as The Club at Hillbrook. An elegant home originally constructed in 1472 inspired the architectural design, which Mr. Burke visited in Ashford, Kent, England. This 40-room Tudor mansion had a portion brought across the Atlantic to rebuild it as its originally stood back in England. Mr. Burke and his wife Josephine Brainard Chisholm had four (4) children: Josephine, Kathleen, Parthenia and Stevenson.
The mansion’s hardwood woodwork is carved from over 50 acres of black walnut and maple woodlands. When the property was under Mr. Burke’s ownership, the grounds required over 30 full-time gardeners. This was done to maintain thousands of varieties of trees and formal gardens appropriately. In 1946, Mr. Burke sold Hillbrook to Paul R. Johnston. Mr. Johnston transformed the mansion into a club in 1952.
Inside Hillbrook, guests will find thousands of leaded glass panes in windows, panelling and woodwork. They will also be awed with the gorgeous mantels of carved wood and marble. Since it started as a home for Mr. Burke and his family, The Club at Hillbrook continues its tradition by engaging people to feel at home, to rejoice special occasions, and to make lasting memories.
The Club at Hillbrook serves baked polenta, crab cake, bourbon cheese, and soup du jour as starters. Their Greens Menu includes cob salad, Hillbrook salad full, Ceasar salad full, and Greek salad. For Hands On, they offer Hillbrook burger, Turkey wrap, vegetable slides, and blackened grouper sandwich.
The Club at Hillbrook also serves Italian chicken, roasted salmon, and seafood medley. You can also order for pan seared scallops, filet beef, or pasta and meatballs.
